Zostavax: Shingles Vaccine

Over a million people in the USA are affected by shingles every year. The risk for shingles
increases as you get older,
and anyone aged 60 and over, and who has had chickenpox,
is at risk. The long term complication from shingles is often postherpetic neuralgia, which
means the virus can damage nerve endings, leading to chronic burning, stabbing, and
shooting pain.

Other serious problems include skin infection, muscle weakness, scarring, or loss of vision
or hearing. Long-term nerve pain hurts more and lasts longer in older adults. Zostavax is a
one time booster shot to prevent shingles. Some Insurance plans are now beginng to cover
Zostavax.
